Your liver is one of your body’s most hardworking organs, and protecting it starts with prevention. At MyDoctor, we provide the Hepatitis B (HepB) vaccine, a safe and highly effective way to shield yourself from a virus that is a leading cause of liver cancer and chronic liver disease worldwide.

What is the Hepatitis B Vaccine?

The Hepatitis B vaccine is a preventive treatment that protects you from the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV). HBV is a major global health concern and a primary contributor to:

  • Liver Inflammation (Hepatitis)
  • Liver Cirrhosis (Scarring of the liver)
  • Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma)

How it works: The vaccine uses inactivated proteins from the virus (surface antigens). These proteins cannot cause the disease, but they “train” your immune system to produce antibodies. If you are ever exposed to the actual virus in the future, your body will recognize and destroy it. For most people, this protection lasts for life.

Why Is Vaccination Essential?

Hepatitis B is highly contagious and spreads through contact with infected blood, semen, or other bodily fluids. Because many people with HBV show no symptoms for years, the virus can silently damage the liver.

In Singapore, the Hepatitis B vaccine is a core recommendation under both the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS) and the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS).

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

  • Infants: All newborns should receive their first dose at birth, followed by doses at 1–2 months and 6–18 months.
  • Children & Adolescents: Anyone under 18 who missed their childhood shots should catch up as soon as possible.
  • Adults: All unvaccinated adults, especially those at higher risk, including:
    • Healthcare workers.
    • Individuals with chronic liver or kidney disease.
    • Those with multiple sexual partners or STIs.
    • Travelers to regions with high HBV rates.

Vaccination Schedule & What to Expect

At MyDoctor, the HepB vaccine is typically administered as a series of 3 injections in the upper arm:

  1. First Dose: At your chosen date.
  2. Second Dose: 1 month after the first dose.
  3. Third Dose: 6 months after the first dose.

Common Side Effects

Most patients experience only mild symptoms that resolve quickly, such as:

  • Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
  • Mild fever or fatigue.
  • Headache or joint pain.

Note: Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare. If you experience difficulty breathing or swelling of the face/tongue, seek medical attention immediately.

Can I Use MediSave for the Hepatitis B Vaccine?

Yes! As a MediSave-accredited clinic, MyDoctor can help Singaporeans and Permanent Residents utilize their MediSave500/700 limit to cover the cost of the Hepatitis B vaccine under the NAIS framework. This helps reduce or even eliminate out-of-pocket cash payments for your protection.
