The Malaysian health department recently issued a critical statement that has sent ripples through the healthcare community: as of February 15, 2026, the cumulative number of Tuberculosis (TB) cases has climbed to 2,571. With 503 new detections from 1-7 February alone, particularly in urban clusters across Selangor, Johor, and Sabah, TB has moved from a “background concern” to a front-page public health priority.

What is causing the surge? Public health experts point to a combination of increased post-pandemic migration, high-density urban living, and a “screening gap” where many individuals with latent infections are only now transitioning to active, contagious TB.

Understanding Latent vs. Active TB One of the biggest hurdles in controlling this outbreak is the misunderstanding of how TB works.

  • Latent TB: You have the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria in your body, but your immune system is keeping it “asleep.” You aren’t sick, and you aren’t contagious.
  • Active TB: If your immune system weakens due to stress, malnutrition, or other illnesses, the bacteria “wake up.” This is when you become symptomatic and can spread the disease to others through the air.

With 2,571 cases already active in our neighbouring country, the goal for 2026 is Interrupting Transmission. This means identifying those in the “Latent” stage before they become sick.

Modern screenings at MyDoctor are faster and more accurate than ever, utilizing interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) that require only a single blood draw.
