The shingles vaccine, known as Shingrix®, is designed to protect you against shingles—a painful viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (the same virus responsible for chickenpox).
Shingrix® is a recombinant, adjuvanted vaccine that helps your body build robust, long-lasting immunity. It has largely replaced the older Zostavax® vaccine due to its superior efficacy. As our risk for shingles naturally increases with age, Shingrix® provides the strong, reliable protection needed to prevent the virus and its complications.
What Is Shingles?
Shingles (herpes zoster) occurs when the dormant chickenpox virus reactivates in the nervous system later in life. While not life-threatening, it causes a severe, painful rash that can lead to long-term complications. Shingles is most common in individuals over 50. Who Is the Shingles (Shingrix®) Vaccine Recommended for?
The Shingrix® vaccine is recommended for all adults aged 50 and older, regardless of whether they recall having had chickenpox, as the risk of shingles and its complications increases with age. Additionally, individuals who have previously had shingles or were vaccinated with Zostavax® are also advised to receive the Shingrix® vaccine for stronger and longer-lasting protection.
Shingles (Shingrix®) Vaccine Cost in Singapore
Starting September 2025, Singaporeans aged 60 and above, as well as adults aged 18 and older with specific immunocompromising conditions, will be eligible for subsidies on the Shingles (Shingrix) vaccine at CHAS GP clinics, polyclinics, and selected MOH-funded care providers.
With effect from 1 June 2026, MediSave may also be used to offset remaining costs after subsidies, including MediSave500, MediSave700, and Flexi-MediSave for seniors aged 60 and above.
